What is IT 2.0?

As the first research university of the 21st century UC Merced has had innovative and pervasive information technology deeply interwoven into all facets of the campus.

Information Technology at UC Merced encompasses innovative web technologies and technology enhanced classrooms, the wired network at the wall and the wireless network in the air. It includes the telephone at your desk and the mobile phone in your pocket; your email and electronic calendars; conference rooms and computer labs; cameras and course management systems; digital storage and digital displays; videoconferencing and video presentations; Identity Management and security; Student Information Systems, support services, and software licensing; printing, planning, and programming. The infrastructure that helps keep you safe and the digital backbone that helps keep you connected. It is the faces you see when you have technology problems and the voices you hear when you call for assistance. Information Technology at UC Merced provides the framework and underlying systems that support and enable the technologies you interact with everyday as a member of the UC Merced community.

Building a campus and a world class technology infrastructure required a dedicated and focused effort. The next phase in the development and maturation of our Campus and organization requires an equally dedicated but refocused effort. That next phase, that refocused effort, is IT 2.0.

IT 1.0 was building a foundation to support the future. IT 2.0 is building upon that foundation to empower the UC Merced Community. Information Technology is the invisible engine that empowers teaching, research, and service. IT 2.0 is the visible fabric woven from effective, responsive, and active partnerships between information technology and the campus community.

IT 2.0 is our ongoing effort to actively engage that campus community.

IT 2.0 is aligning Information Technology services and technologies with Campus goals and priorities.

IT 2.0 is refocusing Information Technology from start-up to a full service organization that provides innovative solutions and services from the perspective of those who use them.

IT 2.0 seeks to redefine Information Technology at UC Merced not as what we are but as what you need us to be.

IT 2.0 is about viewing our services through your eyes and with your assistance.
